A tornado in KwaZulu-Natal caused some severe damage to property and cost at least two people their lives. The weather phenomenon hit New Hanover in central KwaZulu-Natal, close to Pietermaritzburg, on Tuesday.

At least two people died due to the tornado with another twenty being injured, some seriously.

A large number of animals were also killed and the area’s electricity supply was interrupted. There was also severe damage to property with roofs being blown off houses.

Continued severe weather is expected in the province for the rest of the week.

Tornadoes are most common in North America, although they have been recorded on every continent except for Antarctica. In Africa they are most common in South Africa, although there are occasional incidents in West Africa.
