John Steenhuisen was elected as the interim leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) yesterday. Steenhuisen had already been serving as the party’s parliamentary leader and prior to that was its Chief Whip in Parliament. He beat Makashule Gana, a member of the provincial legislature in Gauteng to the post.

Figures were not released by the party but it is understood that Steenhuisen had beaten Gana by a significant margin.

Steenuisen will serve until April next year when the a permanent leader will be elected at a party congress. Steenhuisen will be in pole position to be elected to the position, following his victory yesterday.

Ivan Meyer was also elected as the party’s interim federal chair. Meyer is currently the Provincial Minister of Agriculture in the Western Cape.
