South Africa saw a slight improvement in the latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International this week.

Countries are given a score of zero to 100, with zero indicating a country is highly corrupt, while 100 shows that a country is completely corruption free. South Africa scored 44 on the 2019 index, a slight improvement on the 43 recorded in the previous year. This meant that on the CPI South Africa was the 70th least corrupt country in the world.

Denmark and New Zealand were joint top, each country receiving a rating of 87.

Finland, Sweden, and Singapore rounded out the top five.

Somalia received the lowest score on the CPI, with a rating of 9, making it the worst of the 180 countries included in the service.

The Seychelles was rated as the least corrupt African country, coming in at 27. South Africa’s neighbour, Botswana, was second at 34.
