Amazon is looking to increase its number of employees, partly as a result of the global COVID-19 crisis.

“We are seeing a significant increase in demand, which means our labor needs are unprecedented for this time of year,” said Dave Clark, senior vice president of Worldwide Amazon operations.

Whilst self-quarantine and social distancing are negatively impacting many economically (especially those who are paid hourly wages), Amazon is seeing a boom in business.

This is due to people staying at home and opting for online shopping during the pandemic.

Clark said: “Many people have been economically impacted as jobs in areas like hospitality, restaurants, and travel are lost or furloughed as part of this crisis. We want those people to know we welcome them on our teams until things return to normal and their past employer is able to bring them back.”

According to Clark, Amazon will be adding 100 000 full or part-time jobs in the US and upping the pay (of usually $15/hour or more) by $ 2 more per hour during April. In Britain the rate will be increased by £2 and in Europe by €2. The Seattle-based company also stated that they are taking precautions such as social distancing at work and enhanced cleaning regimes to protect employees whilst business continues.
