Images of panic buying across the world have been widely circulated on social media, but some countries have their own unique take on what’s important to stock up on.

Whilst many countries have had a rush to buy toilet paper, the French are rushing to buy baguettes owing to fears that the supply may be interrupted.

The French eat an estimated 9 billion baguettes a year and the bread is considered a symbol of French culture around the world.

However, despite fears that baguettes may become unavailable, bakeries are some of the few shops that are allowed to remain open under France’s new lockdown rules.

One bakery reported selling around 800 baguettes a day and being out of the loaves by 15:00.

The French government has allowed bakeries to remain open seven days a week, where normally they are restricted to six days a week.

Lockdowns may tighten in the future as France now has more than 9 000 cases of Covid-19 and nearly 250 deaths.
