Rwanda, which began an almost total lockdown on 21 March to contain the coronavirus outbreak, is now seeking to extend the lockdown by a further two weeks.

The lockdown preventing Rwandans from leaving their homes except to buy food or medication has been strictly enforced. Two people have allegedly been shot dead for violating the lockdown.

The lockdown was meant to end this week, but the Rwandan cabinet has extended it to 19 April after a surge in detected cases from 17 to 82 over the last two weeks.

All Rwanda’s borders have been closed to all non-citizens during the lockdown.
