A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane crashed on Friday in the city of Karachi. Two of the 98 passengers and crew survived, but the crash – in a suburban neighbourhood near the airport – killed and injured others on the ground.

The Airbus 320, having sent a mayday call after losing an engine, came down among houses on its approach to the airport.

By yesterday, at least 40 bodies had been recovered from the debris. Reports indicated there were 91 passengers and seven crew on board. Seemin Jamali of Jinnah Post Graduate Medical College in Karachi said residents of houses at the crash site were among the dead and injured brought to the hospital.

Flights in Pakistan only resumed in the past few days, after planes had been grounded due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
