As the border confrontation between India and China grinds on in the Ladakh region, India’s Home Affairs Minister, Amit Shah, has said that his government is committed to defending the entire country.

‘We are vigilant for every inch of our land, no one can take it away… Our defence forces and leadership are capable of defending the country’s sovereignty and border,’ he said in a media interview. India was doing all that is possible to resolve the situation on the disputed border, he added.

Meanwhile, the Chinese embassy in Delhi protested about the airing on television channel India Today of an interview with the Taiwanese Minister of Foreign Affairs. The embassy said that the minister had advocated independence and that this was a violation of its One China principle.

The embassy also took issue with the display of Taiwanese flags around the celebration of the island state’s National Day.

Relations between Taiwan and India have strengthened in recent years; tensions with China have encouraged this.
