Incumbent Yoweri Museveni has been declared the winner of Uganda’s Presidential election, which was held last week.

According to official results from the country’s electoral commission, Museveni won 58.6% of the vote. His challenger, musician Bobi Wine, received 34.8% of the vote according to official results.

Only one other candidate, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, received more than one percent of vote, securing 3.2%. Amuriat campaigned for President barefoot since November, after he lost his shoes when he was arrested.

Museveni has been President of the country since 1986, when he came to power after overthrowing Milton Obote.

The Ugandan government shut down the Internet the day before the election, making it difficult for the opposition to communicate. Wine said that he had been placed under virtual house arrest, with soldiers preventing him and his wife from leaving, and preventing anybody coming to his home, including journalists.

Wine also said he would provide evidence of widespread cheating in the election and said the vote was ‘the most fraudulent election in the history of Uganda’. Conversely, Museveni said in an address to the nation over the weekend that this was the fairest election in Uganda since the 1960s.
