Prosecutors have warned that motorists caught speeding over Easter may get off because of a missed deadline on publishing regulations on the calibration and verification of equipment used to measure speed.

According to a report in BusinessTech, Minister of Trade and Industry Ebrahim Patel failed to publish the regulations before the 31 March deadline, as required by the Legal Metrology Act.

A senior prosecutor said valid calibration and verification certificates for equipment that measures speed was a legal requirement without which a motorist could not be prosecuted.

The Democratic Alliance, and provincial traffic officials, have warned that this could prove to be disastrous since traffic always picks up over the Easter weekend.

Spokesperson for the Road Traffic Management Corporation, Simon Zwane, told BusinessTech that officials were engaging with regulators to extend the missed deadline.
