On Friday Western Cape MEC for Transport Daylin Mitchells announced the closure of a major taxi route, the B97, between Mbekweni in Paarl and Bellville, starting from Monday.

This follows weeks of taxi violence in the province.

This brings to seventeen the number of taxi routes that have been affected since Monday 19 July. Extra Golden Arrow bus services have been added between Bellville and Paarl.

Taxi associations not affiliated to warring Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) and the Congress for Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta) are allowed to operate from the Bellville public transport interchange. Only those issued with permits will be allowed to enter the interchange.

This route is believed to be the main cause of attacks, with both associations claiming the right to operate on it.

Approximately 82 people have been killed in taxi violence since the beginning of the year.
