The leader of a breakaway faction of Mozambique’s main opposition, Mariano Nhongo, has been killed.

Nhongo was the leader of a faction of Renamo, called the Renamo Military Junta (RMJ), which disagreed with the decision of the organisation to sign a peace deal with the government.

Renamo and the Mozambican government fought a civil war between 1975 and 1992 with fighting flaring up again between 2013 and 2016, followed by a peace deal in 2019.

However, the RMJ disagreed with the peace deal and continued to launch attacks on government soldiers and facilities, as well as civilians.

Nhongo was killed on Monday in fighting with government forces and it is hoped that his followers will all lay down their arms.

The Mozambican government currently faces a number of security threats, not least a jihadist insurgency in the north of the country.
