Liz Cheney, the daughter of former US vice-president, Dick Cheney, and a Republican congresswoman for Wyoming, has lost her bid to be re-elected to the US House of Representatives.

In the primary to determine who will be the Republicans’ nominee for the general election scheduled for November, Cheney lost to Harriet Hageman. Cheney, who was first elected to Congress in 2016, only managed 28.9% of the vote in the primary, against Hageman’s 66.3%.

Cheney had been a harsh critic of former President Donald Trump, while her opponent had been endorsed by the former US leader.

Hageman was initially a critic of Trump, but has in recent years said she was misled into not initially supporting him.

On the social media platform, Truth Social, Donald Trump said after Cheney’s loss: ‘Liz Cheney should be ashamed of herself, the way she acted, and her spiteful, sanctimonious words and actions towards others. Now she can finally disappear into the depths of political oblivion where, I am sure, she will be much happier than she is right now.’
