Inflation in South Africa in May was 6.3%, lower than the expectations of economists.
It is also lower than the annual inflation rate for April, which was 6.8%.
Despite this lower inflation it is still outside the target band of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), of between three and six percent.
On a month-to-month basis South Africa experienced slight deflation, with inflation being -0.2% between April and May.
Food inflation also slowed in May. The annual inflation rate for food and non-alcoholic drinks was 11.8%, compared to the previous month’s 13.9%. The price of meat increased by 7.1% in May, compared to an annual increase of 9.5% in April.
