Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers has called a State of Emergency in the Amhara region as fighting intensifies between regional forces and the central government’s military.
This follows not long after a similar conflict between Ethiopia’s central government and the Tigray region in the north of the country, which saw heavy handed actions by the central government and a blockade which ultimately managed to crush the regional government’s forces and ability to resist. There were accusations of war crimes from both sides in the conflict.
The Amhara region has been gripped by instability since April, when central authorities began disarming Amhara’s security forces.
