President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon has been released from house arrest, which was imposed after a military coup in the country at the end of last month.
A spokesperson for the military, Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi, said that Ondimba ‘can, if he wishes, go abroad to carry out his medical checks’.
The military has named Raymond Ndong Sima as the holder of the newly created position of ‘prime minister of the transition’.
Sima previously served as prime minister under Ondimba between 2012 and 2014.
General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema leads the new military government and has promised a peaceful transition to civilian rule.
