The Russian military is executing its soldiers who retreat from fighting in the ongoing Ukraine war, according to the US.
There has been bitter and intense fighting around the frontline town of Avdiivka in the east of the country since the middle of October.
Ukraine estimates that Russia has suffered about 5 000 casualties in fighting for the town, with the American government saying that Russia has also lost over 100 armoured vehicles.
John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, the main security advisory body for the US President, was quoted as saying: ‘”Russia’s mobilised forces remain under-trained, under-equipped and unprepared for combat, as was the case during their failed winter offensive last year.’
The US also said that some of the casualties suffered by Russian forces were ‘on the orders of their own leaders’.
