Elections are a step closer in Haiti, with the embattled Caribbean island nation forming a body to oversee polls.
This week the country set up a nine-member provisional electoral council which will organise elections. Currently the most likely date for elections is February 2026.
The last time Haitians voted was in 2016.
Jovenel Moise, who was elected that year, was assassinated by Colombian mercenaries in 2021. This saw the country plunged into chaos, with gangs and warlords seizing much of the country. Gangs gained control of the capital and the main airport earlier this year.
Haiti is currently under a state of emergency, which was declared earlier this month in an attempt to break the power of the gangs.
