The global governing body for chess, the International Chess Federation (Fide), has upheld its ban on Russia from international chess tournaments. Its ally, Belarus, also remains banned.
At a meeting in Bulgaria, the organisation voted to maintain sanctions, which were first introduced following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Delegates from Russia said that politics should be kept out of the game and urged members to lift sanctions, but it was not successful in this petition.
