Earth will temporarily get a second moon this month.

According to astronomers, an asteroid will be captured by Earth’s gravity and effectively be a second moon for a few months before escaping.

The asteroid was discovered only last month by NASA, and has been designated 2024 PT5. It is only about 10m long.

According to scientists, it will be captured by Earth’s gravity on 29 September and leave on 25 November. It is expected to make another visit in 2055.

Earth’s capturing of asteroids temporarily and seeing them become mini-moons is reportedly a relatively common phenomenon.
