The Proteas will tour Bangladesh later this month for a two-Test series.
This confirmation comes after a security visit by Cricket South Africa (CSA) officials to the Asian country to determine whether it would be safe for the team to visit. Bangladesh has been rocked by unrest for weeks now. Protests began in June, led by university students who wanted quotas for government jobs removed. A third of government jobs were reserved for the relatives of veterans who had fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence against Pakistan in the early 1970s. The protests soon became more general and widespread, which led to the government being toppled, and the country’s Prime Minister, Sheilk Hasina, fleeing the country.
It is estimated that more than 1 500 people died in the unrest.
The Proteas are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on 16 October with the first Test scheduled to begin in Dhaka on 21 October. A second match will start on 29 October in Chattogram.
