The 2024 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to two American scientists for their discovery of and work on microRNA.
MicroRNA helps influence how genes work.
The two scientists, Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun, will share a prize pot worth nearly R20 million.
The Nobel Prize committee said: “Their groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that turned out to be essential for multicellular organisms, including humans. It is now known that the human genome codes for over 1,000 microRNAs.”
