The Prime Minister of the UK, Sir Keir Starmer, has been urged to begin talks with EU bosses about a new UK-EU customs union.
Starmer is due to meet UE leaders in Brussels today with Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, the third-biggest party in the UK, saying that Starmer needs to “fire the starting gun” on a new customs union.
This is the first time that a British leader has been invited to such an EU meeting, since the UK left the EU in 2020.
Starmer has ruled out rejoining the EU customs market but there are a number of other possibilities, such as joining the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean convention, which allows tariff-free trade on some goods across a number of countries in Europe, north Africa, and the Middle East.
