The world-famous Louvre museum in Paris, is set to get an overhaul as part of French President Emmanuel macron’s “New Renaissance” project.
Macron made the announcement at the Louvre, the world’s most-visited museum, and which is home to a number of famous artworks, notably Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
As part of the changes a second entrance will be built and the Mona Lisa will be moved to a new exhibition space. Visitors will be charged separately to see the Mona Lisa. In addition, visitors from outside the EU will be charged more to visit.
This comes after the management of the Louvre had appealed to the French government for help, saying the museum was unable to cope with the high number of visitors, with about nine million people visiting each year.
Macron said that the overhaul would cost French taxpayers nothing with it being funded through ticket sales, donations, and sponsorship deals.
