South Africa and Rwanda are both vying to get the first African F1 race to be held on the continent this century.
In recent years there has been a push for the event to return to Africa, with seven-time F1 champion, Lewis Hamilton, being one of the loudest advocates for an African F1.
Rwanda officially launched a bid to host an F1 race in December.
South Africa is seen by some as being more likely to get the event if it returns to Africa, as the country has an existing tradition of motor racing and hosted a number of races in the past. In addition, South Africa won’t have to build a track from scratch, with Kyalami in Johannesburg just needing several upgrades to bring it up to modern F1 standards.
Sports minister, Gayton McKenzie, is also a backer of F1 returning to South Africa, saying it will give the country a major economic boost.
