European leaders have backed an Arab-devised plan to rebuild Gaza.

The plan, devised by Egypt and backed by Arab leaders, would cost US$53 billion, and would not displace Gazans.

However, the US and Israel have rejected the plan.

The Arab-backed plan calls for Gaza to be temporarily governed by an independent committee of experts for a set time, with international peacekeepers.

The plan is an alternative to the plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, which would see the United States take over the territory and resettle its existing population.
