Police in Kenya say they have been instructed to not report deaths during a crackdown on protests against tax increases.

It is unclear who issued this order.

An independent watchdog claims that Kenyan police killed six people this week, bringing the total killed since the protests began to 27.

Opposition groups in Kenya and foreign donors have accused the Kenyan police of increasingly underhanded tactics and brutality.

Kenya’s president William Ruto however on Thursday thanked police for ‘standing firm and ensuring that there is peace’.
