Denmark is to consider making it illegal to burn the Koran and other religious texts.
The Danish foreign ministry said that while it acknowledges the importance of free speech and expression, protests where the Koran is burned posed a threat to the country’s national security.
Sweden is reportedly considering a similar ban.
Both countries have been criticised by Muslim-majority countries after allowing protests where the Islamic holy book was burned, which have also damaged diplomatic relations.
Regarding the possible banning of burning the Koran the Danish foreign ministry said: ‘This must of course be done within the framework of the constitutionally protected freedom of expression and in a manner that does not change the fact that freedom of expression in Denmark has very broad scope.’
