The UN envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes, has resigned, and has warned that fighting between different elements of the country’s security forces could erupt into full civil war.
Three months ago the Sudanese government said he was unwelcome in the country.
Fighting has been ongoing between the Sudanese military and a paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). About five million people have been displaced internally, while another one million have fled the country completely.
According to the BBC Perthes was very critical of Sudanese leaders in an address to the UN security council, saying that Sudanese military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and RSF chief, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hemedti) had chosen to plunge the country into war.
