United States senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey was charged on Thursday with conspiring to act as an agent of the Egyptian government without registering as a foreign agent. U.S. senators are prohibited from being registered foreign agents.
The charge claims that Menendez “promised to take and took a series of acts on behalf of Egypt, including on behalf of Egyptian military and intelligence officials.”
This latest charge follows a charge of bribery leveled against Menendez last week for allegedly accepting bribes of cash and gold from 3 New Jersey Businessmen who wanted the senator’s help shaping U.S. foreign policy.
Menendez has denied the allegations.
Republican law makers have called on senator Menendez to resign, but so far, the only Democratic senator to call for his resignation is John Fetterman of Pennsylvania.
