AfriForum and Mngxitama head to court

AfriForum and Black First Land First (BLF) leader Andile Mngxitama will meet in the Equality Court over a charge of hate speech.

The court encounter relates to public utterances by Mngxitama in December last year that his party would kill five white people for every black person murdered in South Africa.

He said in an address to supporters: ‘We’ll kill their children. We’ll kill their women. We’ll kill anything that we find on our way… We’ll kill their dogs. We’ll kill their cats. We’ll kill anything that comes before us.’

Mngxitama said that he was responding to remarks by business magnate Johann Rupert that he had an ‘army’ of supporters in the taxi industry which would protect him, and that this implied a threat to black people.

It is understood that Mngxitama will conduct his own defence.

The BLF has experienced a number of setbacks recently. In July, the Independent Electoral Commission deregistered it as a political party eligible for participation in elections, on the grounds of its racially exclusive membership.
