DA woes continue as party surrenders ward to ANC

The electoral troubles of the Democratic Alliance (DA) continued with the party’s losing a ward in the east of Johannesburg to the African National Congress in a by-election last week.

The DA-held Ward 109, which includes the suburbs of Morningside Manor, Wendywood, Kelvin, Eastgate and Marlboro, became vacant following the resignation of the incumbent councillor, Werner Smit.

The party retained three other wards.

Party insiders told the Daily Friend that Smit resigned following conflict and infighting within the DA Johannesburg caucus that has pitted factions of the party against each other and the mayor, Herman Mashaba.

Infighting has cost the DA dearly over recent years and a significant effort is being made to clamp down on internal conflict within the party – but the Daily Friend’s source said that a serious conflict was still brewing in the Johannesburg ranks of the party.  Many of the conflicts within the party are about fundamental questions of policy and ideology, such as the role of race in empowerment policy, the importance of property rights, and the role of the state in the economy.
