The funny side of the 2019 elections: Where’s the polling station gone?

Staff Writer | May 08, 2019
One Free State polling station opened late … because the tent meant to accommodate it was stolen overnight.

The polling station tent in Ward 35 in Maluti-A-Phofung was reportedly stolen.

The IEC’s Mmabatho Rasengane advised that in Ward 35 voting did not start at 7am as scheduled because the tent meant to serve as the polling station had been stolen during the night.

Ms Rasengane assured the election organisers, however, that the tent was replaced and voting commenced.

Some voting stations in the Free State opened late due to rainy weather. Ms Rasengane said, however, that all was set to run smoothly in the region.

She confirmed that a voting station in Ward 47 in Bloemfontein opened later than 7am due to the late delivery of ballot papers, but indicated that ballot papers had reached all voting stations and she expected the poll to proceed well.
