Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, the Australian breakdancer who received no points at the Paris Olympics, has been named the number 1 in the world for the sport.

The World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF) accorded the ranking based on her four best performances over the past 12 months – by which measures she bested all her peers.

Raygun – or, more formally, Dr Rachael Gunn – lectures in media and creative industries in the Department of Media, Communication, Creative Arts, Languages and Literature at Macquarie University in Sydney.

She won the Oceania Continental Championship over that period, which is a coveted position.

The WDSF clarified, however, that as many dancers only participated in one event over the period under review, their scores may not have had the same chance to shine as Gunn’s.

However, it is likely that she will soon be displaced, as the 12-month period is set to expire soon, and a tournament in Shanghai next month is held.

Gunn became a butt of media scorn for her Olympic routine. She apologised for bringing ridicule on the breakdancing community, but maintained that she had performed well.

“I knew that I was going to get beaten, and I knew that people were not going to understand my style and what I was going to do,” she said.
