Leah Tutu, wife of Desmond Tutu, has confirmed that the Archbishop emeritus and Nobel laureate has been admitted to hospital.

She said in a statement issued by the Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation that her 88-year-old husband was being treated for ‘a stubborn infection’.

In 1997, Tutu revealed that he had prostate cancer.

Although the former leader of South Africa’s Anglican community has mostly retired from public life, he is reported to have celebrated the Springbok’s Rugby World Cup win in October, and, earlier in the year, met the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during their visit to the Cape.
