In the run-up to the African National Congress’s annual January 8 celebrations, President Cyril Ramaphosa has demanded that local authorities in the Northern Cape deal with urgent quality-of-life issues. He would be keeping a close eye on this.

President Ramaphosa addressed such matters as a faulty sewerage system, demanding answers from an engineer as to the nature of the problem and why it had not been attended to.

‘You can’t have sewerage that is causing so much distress to the community. It is only 2km and all you need to do is increase the pipe. Engineer, please,’ the president said.

He assured the community that he would monitor the situation.

He also defended the government’s record on creating employment, arguing that this was a problem throughout southern Africa. ‘Many of those countries have the same problems that we have of not having jobs,’ he said.

He promised that government had prioritised the matter and would deal with it.

‘Now we are focusing all our attention on coming up with strategies and plans and interventions to create jobs,’ Ramaphosa said.
