The novel-coronavirus 2019, nicknamed the Coronavirus by the media, has infected over 28 000 people worldwide, with the vast majority of those infections being concentrated in the People’s Republic of China.

Whilst much is not known about the virus, it is predicted to have a mortality rate of between two and three percent, with most victims being those with underlying health concerns, as well as the old and the young.

In the case of a widespread infection of millions, this may result in hundreds of thousands of deaths, making it more dangerous than the seasonal flu if not contained. Seasonal flu has a mortality rate of around 0.9%.

In response to the spread of the virus, the Chinese government has shut off access to multiple cities effectively quarantining millions of people.

It is also encouraging people to stay home and not go to work until the virus is under control.

Whilst the illness is not yet a pandemic, the World Health Organization has asked governments around the world to be on the alert.

South Africa has as yet no reported cases. However, due to weaknesses in SA’s health system and the high rate of tuberculosis and HIV infection, the potential for significant human cost remains.
