Obediah Moyo, the Zimbabwean minister of health, has been fired by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Moyo has been accused of being involved in corruptly awarding a multi-million dollar government contract to procure medical equipment.

Moyo faces charges of corruption and criminal abuse of his office regarding the role he played in a deal with a company based in the United Arab Emirates. The company would have supplied personal protective equipment and test kits for Covid-19.

Opposition parties in the country raised alarm over the transaction and succeeded in pressuring the government to cancel all contracts with the company.

If found guilty Moyo faces up to fifteen years in jail. He is currently out on bail and is expected to appear in court on 31 July.
