Hawks head General Godfrey Lebeya has insisted the crime-busting unit has ‘never taken instructions from anyone’ and that he would ‘never allow the Hawks to get involved in politics’.

Lebeya gave this assurance in an interview with News24.

‘We are apolitical. We are not going to allow ourselves to be involved in politics,’ he said.

Lebeya was responding to accusations that the Hawks were engaging in politics in the wake of a claim this week that African National Congress secretary-general Ace Magashule’s arrest was imminent.

Lebeya, who made it clear he did not comment on pending investigations, said he had never had a conversation with President Cyril Ramaphosa about any investigation, adding: ‘He has never directed me to investigate anybody.’
