There have been some 752 farm attacks and 206 murders on farms in KwaZulu-Natal since 2000. This is according to the province’s community safety MEC Bheki Ntuli.

Responding to a question from Chris Pappas of the Democratic Alliance, Ntuli said that, of the attacks, 372 were directed at farmers, and 380 at farmworkers. Of those murdered, 87 were farmers and 119 were farmworkers.

According to the DA, almost a quarter of the attacks on farmworkers involved rape.

Out of the total 752 farm attacks, a conviction was secured in only 56 cases.

The DA said that this showed that new and urgent interventions were needed to deal with rural safety.
