Stellenbosch University is to establish South Africa’s first school devoted to studying climate change.

Eugene Cloete, Vice Rector for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies noted that – with the status of a faculty – this was the first such institution in South Africa. He said it would support the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

He added that Stellenbosch University had the capacity to provide leadership in this process through its research and innovation. The institution was ‘leading the field’ in creating a carbon-neutral university.

Stellenbosch was designing a master’s degree in climate studies to nurture the capacity that the country needed in this field. In addition, the energy transition would create numerous opportunities in engineering, agriculture and so on.

‘Virtually every industry will be affected’, said Cloete.
