The Kenyan government is planning to place a ban on romantic relationships between police officers, in a move the government hopes will reduce the high rate of “crimes of passion” and cases of sexual harassment between police officers.

The plan was announced during a police graduation ceremony during which the interior minister was giving a speech to recent police graduates. The regulations will first need to be approved by the “National Security Council” of Kenya before they can take effect.

The move follows a similar ban on relationships between army personnel of different ranks.

The government’s planned ban comes months after a series of high-profile spousal murders amongst police officers that have caused outrage in Kenya.

The Star, a Kenyan newspaper, quoted the interior minister as saying “Moving forward, it will be illegal for a police officer to date or get married to a fellow law enforcement officer. If it happens that two police officers fall in love, then one has to leave the service.”
