The Gauteng Department of Health called on members of the public to help to put an end to the ongoing attacks on emergency services personnel in the line of duty.

This followed a recent attack that involves two paramedics who were shot and wounded on Friday while responding to a crime in Dukathole, an informal settlement in Germiston. In an earlier incident, a shift leader and her crew , who were responding to a distress call, were attacked by community members in Magaliesburg.

The attack on the paramedics slowed down the emergency response to the wounded resident who then died on the way to hospital.

On Monday the department warned that these assaults could leave communities without emergency medical assistance.

EWN reports that department spokesperson, Kwara Kekana, said ‘The last thing we want is for EMS personnel to start fearing for their lives instead of being concerned about saving as many lives as possible’
