Advocate Ooshara Sewpaul has been appointed by the Justice and Constitutional Department to head a national task team for the protection and promotion of rights of the LGBTQI+ community.

This follows demands by queer activists for government intervention following a spike in homophobic killings in the country.

At least 10 members of the LGBTQI+ community have been killed since the beginning of 2021.

Ronald Lamola, Minister of Justice and Correctional Service, told the Eyewitness News that Sewpaul had been working with the department coordinating work concerning the LGBTQI+ community and that he had been reassigned to head the task team for this reason.

However, some activists are still sceptical of this promise and are demanding that the government take decisive and sustained action.
