The Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) has given finance minister Tito Mboweni 30 days to vacate office, or they will take the matter up with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The alliance says younger people should run the country’s finance department.

The PYA is composed of formations aligned to the ruling party: the ANC Youth League, the Young Communist League, the South African Students Congress and the Congress of South African Students.

The demand forms part of the campaign planned for Youth Month. The aim of the campaign is to ensure that young people are ‘empowered’ to take up key positions in government. Along with the defenestration of the minister, demands include free education and jobs for the youth.

Nonceba Mhlauli of the ANC Youth League said that they were demanding the ‘retirement of old people’ in the Treasury, as there were young people who could run the department.
