The world’s best city to live in is Auckland in New Zealand. This is according to the latest Liveability Index released by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The index looks at a number of the world’s most prominent cities and ranks them on a number of indicators, such as healthcare, education, social and cultural factors, and infrastructure. The EIU noted that the way cities and the countries they were in handled the Covid-19 pandemic played a large role in rankings this year.

New Zealand has done well in handling the pandemic, benefiting from its status as an island and its relative geographical isolation.

The other cities to make up the top five were Osaka in Japan; Adelaide in Australia; another New Zealand city, Wellington; and Tokyo, the Japanese capital.

On the other end of the scale the least liveable city on Earth, according to the EIU, was Damascus in Syria. The other cities in the bottom five were Algeria’s Algiers; Dhaka in Bangladesh; Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea; and the biggest city in Nigeria, Lagos.

Three other African cities – Tripoli in Libya; the Zimbabwean capital, Harare; and Douala in Cameroon – are also in the bottom ten.
