A summit of leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has agreed to deploy a regional military force in northern Mozambique to combat the Islamist insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province.

Mozambique has struggled to contain the insurgency.

The violence inflicted by the group, which is a subsidiary of the Islamic State, has led to the deaths of at least 2 000 people, and has displaced around 700 000 people from their homes.

The statement issued by SADC did not specify the details of the military deployment, but according to the Associated Press, experts have recommended sending a force of at least 3 000 troops to the region.

The deployment will be headquartered in the city of Nacala.
