The decline of Covid-19 cases in Gauteng indicated that the province was slowly getting over the peak of the third wave, according to Professor Salim Abdool Karim.

Abdool Karim, former chair of the ministerial advisory committee on Covid-19, said the third wave was more than twice as great as the first and second waves in the country.

He was quoted by News24 as saying that ‘Gauteng has really been through a rough patch, but now that they are on the decline, the number of cases will start rapidly going down’.

The report cited statistics showing a 21% decrease over the past week.

However, he warned that unrest in KwaZulu-Natal would likely have a severe impact on the current wave of the Covid-19 virus.

Karim told Weekend Witness that the province was likely to see an increase in cases in the next seven to ten days.

He said cases in KwaZulu-Natal were already on the increase before the violence and widespread protests.

‘We expect it to continue going up [and be exacerbated by] the [unrest] situation in KZN …’
