Withover 80% of the vote counted, the ANC remains below 50%.

Some 46% of people who cast their vote on Monday voted for the ANC, with 21.7% having plumped for the DA. The EFF managed just over 10% of the vote.

Of the eight metros, as results currently stand, only Buffalo City (East London) and Cape Town will not be governed in coalitions. In Cape Town the DA has secured 61.8% of the vote. The ANC is the second-largest party, trailing significantly with 14.6% of the vote.

In Buffalo City the ANC has over 60% of the vote, with the DA second, on 17.4%.

In the other metros, the state of play is as follows:

  • Nelson Mandela Bay: ANC 40.8%, DA 39.1%, EFF 6.8%;
  • eThekwini: ANC 43.7%, DA 26.1%, EFF 10.2%, IFP, 6.4%;
  • Mangaung: ANC 43.5%, DA 33.4%, EFF 9.4%, FF+ 6.1%;
  • Ekurhuleni: ANC 37.7%, DA 29.3%, EFF 13.6%, ActionSA 6.6%;
  • Tshwane: ANC 35.8%, DA 31.1%, EFF 11.1%, ActionSA 8.4%, FF+ 7.2%;
  • Johannesburg: ANC 30.7%, DA 30.1%, ActionSA 16.2%, EFF 9.8%.

Of councils where results have been finalised, the ANC was the biggest party in 108 councils while the DA was the biggest in 22. The IFP was the largest party in three while the National Freedom Party and the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa were each the biggest party in a single council.
