Sharp declines in support for the ANC in key metros across South Africa are borne out in a comparison of its performance in local government elections since 2011.
In a tweet yesterday, News24’s elections analyst Dawie Scholtz pointed out that ANC losses by metro over the last 10 years were:
Johannesburg: -26
Ekurhuleni: -24
Tshwane: -22
eThekwini: -18
Cape Town: -15
Mangaung: -14
Nelson Mandela Bay: -13
Commenting on the numbers, Scholtz noted tersely: ‘Big, consequential numbers.’
